Recent Engagement Shoots

Lately shooting engagement pictures has become more fun and adventurous! We met up with Terry & Jess who are to be married in February in Boulder this fall. The colors were phenominal, the background was full of color and texture, and the couple was clearly in love!

We also met up with Tatum and Kevin in Denver and walked all over getting amazing angles and fun perspectives. Their wedding is next summer.

Bounce Flash Portraits

My friend Jolene and I did some portraits of her for her anniversary to give to her hubby. This picture came out just beautifully. We used the bounce flash, had all the lights off and bounced the flash off of our umbrella. This could be a Christmas card!

So, along with the stars, I had quite a bit of fun shooting the campfire while we sat around and looked skyward. The contrast is pretty intense, and I love how fluid the flames look. I didn't really do anything fancy with exposure here, although I did mess with slowing it down for a few shots. The effect is neat because you get the flames exposing on the sensor in several different locations, which makes it look particularly intense. However, I think I'd want to use the tripod if I was going to try the long exposures again, just because parts of the image still end up being softer than ideal.

Later on, Kim got a shot of me posing as a barbaric heathen from the cruel lands of the fire people.

Camping 1: Stars

So, we went camping with the Rusho parents a few weekends ago, and there were ample opportunities for some really neat shots. Some of my favorites were these star pictures. I was really happy I brought my tripod along for this.

I typically don't spend a whole lot of time using a tripod, just because I prefer to be more flexible and dynamic while shooting, but once in a while there's no substitute for a good, stable foundation.

These shots were done with exposures between 15-30 seconds. What was really surprising to me is that even the 15 second exposure showed fairly obvious trailing when viewed close - which means the stars moved noticeably in that small amount of time. That's actually pretty cool to think about, because when you just lay there looking at them they seem to sit in place, but in reality we're spinning pretty fast down here and you can see it with those long shutter speeds. For some reason I just feel different when I remember that we're another little, shiny object cruising through space. Things seem so solid and consistent, but really our entire planet is moving at an obscene rate, around a sun that's also moving, in a galaxy that's moving on an even more monumental scale.

Anyways, enough with the random tangents. On to the details:

All of these were shot with my Pentax K20 and the FA35/2.0, which is a really killer setup for just about anything. The evening couldn't have been clearer, so all in all it was a really good time.

I've got lots of other pictures from this trip too - some hummingbirds, some shots in downtown Salida, and some abstract fire stuff. I'll get those up in the next few days hopefully.

Mobile Posting

Messing around with the new camera phone. So far I'm impressed.
Hi there, internet! We (the Adamsons) are starting a blog (which you are reading now), centered around our happenings and photography in particular.

To get us started, we've been messing around with a new off-camera flash system - a pretty basic setup, using my Pentax bounce flash with a stand and an umbrella. It has an optical wireless trigger, which works without trouble as long as we're inside. We had fun messing around with it today.

We also decided to start messing with effects a bit more, so for fun we edited some of our test shots to be as epic as possible. Although, of course, those guns you see are totally unenhanced - you're getting the real deal there.

And to keep it even, here are a few of Kim testing out a dress for an upcoming wedding:
